Marvel Fusion Raises more than €60 Million Series B to Reach Full Proof of Technology
Fusion energy is recognized as a potential game-changer in addressing climate change and rising global energy demand.
Marvel Fusion, a fusion energy pioneer, today announced that they have raised EUR 62.8 million in the closing of a Series B round, to ramp up technology development for a commercial fusion power plant.
We at b2venture contributed to the round, which was led by HV Capital, with existing investors Earlybird Venture Capital, Athos Venture, Primepulse, and Plural Platform. Additionally, Deutsche Telekom invests strategically in Marvel Fusion’s technology, acknowledging the importance of clean energy supply for digital telecommunication infrastructure. Marvel Fusion has also been selected by the European Innovation Council to receive a blended finance option of up to €17.5 million through the Council's Accelerator program.
Backed by successful experiments and substantial progress in its laser development, Marvel Fusion has attracted in total more than €120 million in equity investments and over €150 million in public funding and cooperation projects since its foundation in 2019. With the support of existing and new investors and governmental institutions, Marvel Fusion is now one of the leading fusion energy companies globally in the race for commercial power plants.
Marvel Fusion has developed a laser fusion technology based on high-power, short-pulse lasers and nanostructured fuel targets. Since its last financing round in 2021, led by Earlybird Venture Capital, Marvel Fusion has demonstrated key physics drivers of its fusion concept in experimental campaigns in laser facilities at Colorado State University (“CSU”, Fort Collins, US), the Centre for Advanced Laser Applications (“CALA”, Garching, Germany), the Texas Petawatt Laser (Austin, TX, USA) and at the Extreme Light Infrastructure Nuclear Physics (“ELI-NP”, Romania). The scientists of Marvel Fusion have already produced several designs of its nanostructured targets, allowing the build-up of the fuel target production with the newly secured capital.
Moritz von der Linden, the CEO of Marvel Fusion: "With the funding from our Series B and the commitment from the EIC, we can demonstrate the physics and the technology of our approach to meet powerplant requirements. In parallel to building our tech demo in Colorado, we can now invest in further innovation of the technology to drive down cost and to optimize performance.”
Rafael Laguna de la Vera, Director of SPRIND: "The availability of abundant, environment-friendly, reliable, cheap energy everywhere in the world is the father of all breakthrough innovations. With it, many of the world’s problems could be solved once and for all. Fusion energy holds this promise. With its great science and outstanding startups like Marvel Fusion, Germany and Europe are well positioned to take a leadership role in bringing this technology into the world, for the benefit of all."
Gerrit Jurilj, Partner at b2venture: “Fusion energy has the potential to provide an abundant, clean, and baseload-capable energy supply without dependency on imports from autocratic regimes. We are proud to support Marvel Fusion, a pioneer in the space with a unique and groundbreaking approach to make fusion technology commercially viable.”
